Hello Neabsco Stars!

I hope everyone is safe and well.  I miss seeing all of you every day.  In order to keep making music and practicing what we have learned this year, I’m going to update my calendar with activities for you to do!

Personal Learning Projects

Grades K-2 Music American History and Patriotism
::Select one of the songs below for your project::

 Select one or more of the following tasks:
• Explain why you think this piece of music shows a love and/or respect for our country
• Research information about the composer, possibly to include what was the inspiration for writing this piece of music
• Compare and contrast 2 or more selections; this can include what voices and/or instruments are heard, how fast or slow the music is, how loud or soft, etc.
• Create a dance or movement that would show how the music makes you feel
• Select an instrument or create your own instrument from household items and use it to accompany a recording of the song; if possible, write out your composition
• Write a poem or create new lyrics to an existing song that reflect your patriotism
• Draw or paint a picture, or series of pictures, that represent one of the pieces of music
• Find out when in America’s history this piece of music was written and then research what historical events were happening and what famous people were living during that same time period.
• Take photos or make a video of images that would represent the music or your own feelings of patriotism

Select one or more of the following tasks:
• Research your selected composer(s) to include biographical information but also genres of music for which they were famous and the period during which they lived, e.g., Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern. Use this information to write a report or create a visual display.
• Choose two composers from the same time period to compare and contrast; explain what makes their music a reflection of that time period
• Choose two or more compositions by the same composer to compare and contrast
• During the composer’s life, what historic events took place that might have been an influence on the composer? Explain.
• Research how the composer relied on the instruments that were available at the time to create music. What instruments might have been used that had just been created?
• Choose a favorite composition and create an instrumental or vocal accompaniment. Record your creation and/or notate it.
• Investigate the composer’s purpose for writing a particular piece of music
• Using a selected composition:
o Create movement or a dance – will it be a solo or group performance?
o Create a work of art that reflects how this music makes you feel
o Write a story or poem that is inspired by this music
o Write a reflection on what this music means to you
o Analyze the music from the standpoint of form, tonality, dynamics, meter, etc.

• Build an instrument from common household items that could be used to add an accompaniment to the music.
• Create a playlist of music by your favorite composer(s).
• Make a music video with a selected composition as the soundtrack
• Using 3-4 random compositions, create short listening sound bites which can be used to poll friends and family members as to their “favorite” choice. Make a graph to reflect the results of your poll.
